Award Recognizes the Company’s Pioneering “Pre-Recycling” Approach to Solving the Soft Plastic Crisis

The Red Dot Design Award is an international recognition for excellence in product design, evaluated on innovation, functionality, usability, and overall design quality. The award recognizes the SPC for its combination of industrial design and systems-level thinking in addressing a material that existing recycling infrastructure struggles to process.
American households generate an estimated 1,000 to 1,200 pounds of plastic waste per year, and a significant share of that comes from soft plastics such as bags, wrappers, and flexible packaging. Despite this volume, only about 5% of plastic waste in the United States is currently recycled. At the core of the issue is not collection, but system design. Soft plastics are lightweight, easily contaminated, and difficult to process within municipal sorting infrastructure, which was not built for flexible packaging. As a result, most never make it into a recycling stream at all.
Clear Drop’s SPC introduces a pre-recycling step at the point of generation. It compresses soft plastics into dense, standardized blocks that can be stored over time and shipped using prepaid labels to recycling partner Frankfort Plastics in Indiana. There, the material is then processed into reusable feedstock used in products such as decking, pallets, and outdoor infrastructure. By transforming low-density, high-volume waste into a stable transport format, the system improves logistics efficiency and reduces emissions associated with fragmented collection.
The recognition reflects a broader shift in how recycling systems are being rethought. Traditional models assume materials can be collected and processed after disposal, but many modern plastics do not fit within that framework. Clear Drop’s approach moves part of the process upstream, into homes, offices, and other high-waste environments, where material preparation happens before it enters municipal infrastructure.
This shift has broader implications for how waste systems are designed. It reframes recycling not only as a downstream industrial process, but as something that begins at the point of use, with households, businesses and universities acting as active participants in material recovery.
The SPC is now available in the United States. The system is being adopted by households and institutional partners, including universities, research labs, and commercial facilities.
