KBRA releases research on the proved, developed, and producing (PDP) oil and gas ABS market. This market has grown considerably in recent years, becoming an established source of financing alongside traditional reserve-based lending (RBL). Securitization can provide issuers with longer-term committed financing, access to a broader institutional investor base, and a potential source of acquisition financing. The market has also broadened across operators, producing regions, commodity mixes, well seasoning profiles, and transaction structures. This evolution is evident in the KBRA-rated universe, where year-to-date (YTD) issuance reached approximately $6 billion across eight transactions in 2026, with nearly all issuance coming from repeat issuers. KBRA-rated transactions now span approximately 10 operators across eight basins.
As the sector has expanded, collateral profiles and transaction structures have become more varied, while the fundamental risks remain largely unchanged: production variability, commodity price volatility, and the natural decline in production over time. Transactions seek to mitigate these risks through a combination of commodity hedging and structural protections, such as scheduled amortization, overcollateralization, cash flow sweeps, and performance-based triggers that can accelerate principal repayment when collateral performance weakens. How these features interact with well seasoning, production performance, and leverage can affect a transaction’s ability to withstand weaker-than-expected performance. This report examines how collateral profiles and transaction structures have evolved across KBRA-rated PDP ABS transactions.
