Custom Closet Expert Mike Steiner Shares Business Lessons in Authority Magazine Feature
North Bethesda, United States – April 5, 2026 / Bethesda Custom Closets & Blinds /
Authority Magazine, a Medium-based publication that profiles business leaders and entrepreneurs, recently featured Mike Steiner, co-owner and lead designer of Bethesda Custom Closets and Blinds. The profile, part of the publication’s “Five Things I Wish Someone Told Me” series, covers the realities of running a family business in the home organization industry.
The feature comes as the home organization sector continues to grow. The U.S. home organizers and storage market is valued at $12.05 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $15.21 billion by 2030, a compound annual growth rate of 4.78 percent, according to Mordor Intelligence. Remote work and shifting living arrangements have driven demand for custom residential storage — the kind of work that makes up the bulk of what Bethesda Custom Closets and Blinds does.
Steiner, who has run the company with his wife and co-owner Lindsay Steiner since 2002, described an accidental path into the industry. His stepfather, a real estate developer, needed help installing closets in a multifamily property. “I discovered my passion for combining design, craftsmanship, and problem-solving,” Steiner told Authority Magazine. That side job became a career spanning more than two decades.
Family businesses account for 87 percent of all U.S. business tax returns and generate an estimated 54 percent of private sector GDP, according to Family Enterprise USA. But only 30 percent survive to a second generation. The Steiners’ company, now in its 24th year, has beaten those odds. They operate a 4,000 square foot showroom and 7,000 square foot warehouse in North Bethesda and serve homeowners across Montgomery County, Northern Virginia, and the Washington, D.C., metro area.
In the interview, Steiner shared five lessons he wished he had learned sooner. He talked about the value of networking—hosting open houses, building relationships with other professionals in the industry. Opening a physical showroom, he said, was a turning point; clients who could walk through the space were far more likely to move forward. He also pushed for no-pressure consultations, letting homeowners take their time with design decisions rather than forcing a close. Diversifying services helped the company weather slow periods—they expanded from closets into home offices, pantries, Murphy beds, garage storage, and window treatments. And branching into senior living community projects opened a revenue stream he hadn’t anticipated.
“How you respond when something goes wrong is what truly defines your company,” Steiner said. He gave an example: a client noticed paint had dripped on their area rug after an installation. His team tracked down the exact same rug and replaced it within three days, no questions asked. That kind of response, he said, is a big part of why the company holds a five-star Google rating.
Steiner also talked about what it’s like to run a business with family. Lindsay handles operations, finances, and marketing—and Steiner said the company wouldn’t have been able to grow the way it has without that division of labor. Learning to lean on his team instead of carrying everything himself was, he said, one of the bigger shifts in how he works.
The profile also covered the company’s local involvement. Bethesda Custom Closets and Blinds donates surplus materials to Habitat for Humanity and gives employees two paid days a year to volunteer. Steiner donates gift certificates to local charities, too. Both he and Lindsay grew up in Montgomery County.
Bethesda Custom Closets and Blinds offers free in-home design consultations seven days a week for homeowners in the Washington, D.C., metro area. More information is available at bethesdaclosets.com or by calling (240) 600-4554.
