BridgeYear Launches Innovative “Earn-and-Learn” Healthcare Career Pathway in Houston

Expansion of the proven Career Cohort model prepares Houston’s youth for in-demand sterile processing roles at a world-class medical institution.

HOUSTON, TEXAS — April 14, 2026, at its 10th Anniversary Luncheon, BridgeYear announced a significant collaboration with Houston Methodist to launch a new “earn-and-learn” career-pathway initiative designed for recent high school graduates. This marks a significant expansion for both organizations. BridgeYear is scaling its successful workforce development model beyond the automotive industry, initially pioneered alongside foundational partners The Friedkin Group and Gulf States Toyota, into the critical healthcare sector. Houston Methodist has long supported the community through philanthropic investments, but is now building on its efforts with a “straight from high school” pipeline.

Inspired by the success of BridgeYear’s initial automotive apprenticeship programs, Houston Methodist is pioneering a new entry-level hiring career pathway designed specifically for young adults seeking access to living-wage career opportunities. BridgeYear will serve as the strategic connector, recruiting and supporting young adults with enrollment, persistence, and wraparound support as they transition into specialized roles. This partnership will initiate a new career pathway for Sterile Processing Technicians.

“Only 20% of our Houston graduates make a living wage within 6 years of graduating high school. Our local economy is sitting on billions in lost revenue opportunity because they don’t have the skilled workforce,” said Victoria Chen, Executive Director and Co-Founder of BridgeYear. “By expanding our earn-and-learn model into healthcare with Houston Methodist, we are proving that structured, supportive transitions from high school into in-demand careers can redefine economic mobility for Houston’s youth.”

The new Healthcare Career Pathway Pilot begins with a summer program focused on professional development and medical terminology, followed by specialized clinical training. Students will ultimately graduate from the program with the necessary technical certification and hands-on experience within the Houston Methodist system that allows for successful employment opportunities moving forward.

“At Houston Methodist, we believe that investing in our community is synonymous with investing in our future workforce,” said Arianne Dowdell, Vice President and Chief Culture & Engagement Officer at Houston Methodist. “This partnership is about more than just filling roles; it is about creating sustainable, accessible pipelines that allow Houston’s young people to build meaningful careers right here at home. We are proud to work alongside BridgeYear to cultivate the next generation of healthcare talent.”

This announcement coincides with BridgeYear’s 10th anniversary, celebrating a decade of helping over 12,000 young people each year discover and prepare for meaningful careers. As BridgeYear enters its second decade, this partnership serves as a blueprint for how leading Houston employers can solve talent gaps through intentional, systemic innovation.
