Sharp Door Creases: Why They’re Harder to Fix | Paintless Dent Repair Services

Door Creases: Why They Take More Time and Skill | Auto Body Repair, Ardmore, Oklahoma

Ardmore, United States – May 13, 2026 / Southwest Collision /

ARDMORE, Oklahoma, May 12, 2026 – Southwest Collision, an auto body repair shop serving Ardmore, OK, and the surrounding southern Oklahoma region for more than four decades, is clarifying a repair distinction that surprises many vehicle owners: sharp door creases are not the same as ordinary dents, and they should not be treated as such. The shop is addressing the difference directly, following a pattern of incoming vehicles with misdiagnosed crease damage, cases where drivers expected a quick paintless dent repair fix, only to learn the extent of the work involved.

With parking lot incidents, sideswipes, and storm damage regularly affecting drivers across Carter County and nearby communities, including Lone Grove, Wilson, and Sulphur, Southwest Collision wants area vehicle owners to understand the damage they are dealing with before seeking repair.

What Makes a Sharp Door Crease Different

A standard round dent spreads impact energy across a wide surface area. A sharp door crease is different. It concentrates all of that energy into one narrow line, folding and stretching the metal along the crease.

That stretch is the problem.

“A round ding is one thing—a crease is a different kind of damage entirely,” says Joe Jilge, owner of Southwest Collision. “The metal gets stretched along that line, and stretched metal does not want to go back on its own. It takes more time and more hands-on skill to work it out correctly, and the first thing we do is be straight with the customer about what that actually means for their repair.”

Because of that stretch, a door crease cannot always be fixed with paintless dent repair (PDR) alone. PDR is a technique where technicians use specialized tools to massage dents out from behind the panel without disturbing the paint. It works well for round dents and shallow damage, but sharp creases present added challenges.

When Paintless Dent Repair Can and Cannot Help

Paintless dent repair services are often the preferred option for crease repair when the paint remains intact, and the metal has not been stretched beyond recovery. When those conditions are met, PDR can restore the panel without repainting.

However, deep or long creases sometimes require traditional auto body repair methods, which involve reshaping the metal, applying body filler, and repainting the panel.

According to industry experts, PDR can save vehicle owners up to 70% on minor repairs compared to traditional body shop methods. Those savings decrease as the severity of the crease increases.

Repair time is also longer for creases. A standard door ding may take 30 to 60 minutes to fix with PDR. A sharp crease can take three to five hours or more, depending on its length, depth, and location on the panel.

Other Common Damage Types Seen in the Ardmore Area

Southwest Collision also handles hail damage repair for vehicles affected by Oklahoma’s severe weather seasons. Unlike door creases, hail damage creates multiple round dents across large panels. Those dents respond well to PDR in most cases because the metal is bent rather than stretched.

The shop also performs car boot dent repair, which refers to fixing crease and dent damage on trunk lids. Boot lids are common targets for crease damage because they sit at bumper height and are vulnerable to low-speed impacts and scrapes.

“We see a wide range of damage types come through,” Jilge added. “Whether it is a parking lot crease, storm damage, or a boot lid dent, the first step is always an honest look at what the metal actually looks like and what it will genuinely take to fix it right. That does not change regardless of the job.”
