AI in Drug Discovery Market Projected to Reach $8.52 Billion By 2030
PR Newswire
AUSTIN, Texas, Sept. 3, 2026
AUSTIN, Texas, Sept. 3, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Equity Insider News Commentary – Pharmaceutical research is being rebuilt around artificial intelligence faster than the industry can absorb it. Arizton values the global AI in drug discovery market at approximately $1.71 billion in 2024 and projects it will reach roughly $8.52 billion by 2030, a compound annual growth rate of about 30.58%. That is a market compounding at more than double the rate of most enterprise software categories, and it is being spent inside an industry that already invests over $250 billion a year in research and development. The question the forecast does not answer is where the durable value in that spend actually accrues.
Active Companies from around the markets with current developments this week include: MindWalk Holdings Corp. (Nasdaq: HYFT), Tempus AI, Inc. (Nasdaq: TEM), Schrödinger, Inc. (Nasdaq: SDGR), Twist Bioscience Corporation (Nasdaq: TWST), Absci Corporation (Nasdaq: ABSI).
Forecasters size the category differently but point the same direction. Grand View Research estimated the same market at approximately $1.49 billion in 2023 and projects roughly $9.17 billion by 2030 at a compound annual growth rate of about 29.6%. The variance between houses is largely a question of what counts as an AI drug discovery product and what counts as the data plumbing underneath it. That distinction is not a rounding error. It is the whole argument.
Models have become the cheap part. Foundation models are released, licensed, fine-tuned and superseded on a cycle now measured in months, and a discovery team that standardised on one architecture two years ago has almost certainly replaced it. Nothing about that cycle is a durable competitive position. Anything a laboratory can rent from three vendors is not an advantage, it is a cost line.
What has not become cheap is context. Discovery data arrives fragmented by design: sequences in one system, structures in another, assay outputs, omics, literature, provenance and program history scattered across the rest, much of it recorded in formats chosen by whoever ran the experiment. A model pointed at that estate is reasoning over isolated files rather than over connected biology. Worse, the most expensive information a pharmaceutical company owns, the record of what failed and why, is usually the least well preserved.
That has pushed attention toward the layer beneath the models, and toward the same structural question the rest of the AI economy has been working through. In compute the constraint turned out to be power. In life sciences the constraint is proving to be governed, connected, machine-readable biological context, and it is a constraint that cannot be closed by licensing a better model.
MindWalk Holdings Corp. (Nasdaq: HYFT) Reports Fiscal 2026 Revenue Up 46% and Launches ReefIQ™ Biological Context Layer
– Fiscal 2026 revenue of C$15.6 million, up 46% from C$10.6 million.
– Gross margin expanded to 58.8% from 53.9%; net loss from continuing operations narrowed by more than half.
– First two contracted, recurring platform agreements signed during the year.
– ReefIQ™ launched June 10, 2026 as the biological context layer built on HYFT® Technology.
– Regained Nasdaq listing compliance without a reverse split, and added to the Russell 3000E and Russell Microcap Indexes.
MindWalk Holdings Corp. (Nasdaq: HYFT) is a Bio-Native AI company building the BioIntelligence infrastructure that life sciences AI and agentic AI require. Its proprietary HYFT® Technology powers a function-aware representation of biology organized around HYFT pattern-objects spanning sequence and structural biology, refined over twenty years of curation into a continuously evolving biological representation of 660 million biological patterns and 25 billion relationships that enriches data at ingestion and compounds in analytical value with every program run on the platform.
The architecture resolves into three layers that stack rather than compete. HYFT® Technology powers the biological representation. ReefIQ™, launched June 10, 2026, is the biological context layer: it harmonizes a client’s discovery data, links it to MindWalk’s biological representation foundation, preserves provenance and program history, and exposes governed, queryable context. LensAI™ is the reasoning and application layer, operating on that context to support retrieval, analysis, target discovery, candidate diligence, hypothesis generation and portfolio decision support, and to host the agentic AI workflows pharma is racing to deploy. LensAI is already in contracted, recurring arrangements with life-sciences customers today.
“In life-sciences AI, the durable advantage is not the model a team licenses but the biological context it can reason over. Biology is connected by evolutionary constraint; discovery data arrives fragmented across files and systems, and that gap is where insight is lost. ReefIQ is designed to close it, preserving what every program learns, including the programs that fail, as governed context rather than isolated files. In a regulated setting, that is what makes reasoning trustworthy, and trustworthy is what compounds into the clinic,” said Dr. Jennifer Bath, PhD, CEO and President of MindWalk Holdings Corp.
The fiscal year ended April 30, 2026 was the first in which the commercial argument showed up in reported results. Revenue grew 46% to C$15.6 million from C$10.6 million, gross margin expanded to 58.8% from 53.9%, and net loss from continuing operations narrowed by more than half. The company divested its Netherlands subsidiary, completed its rebranding from ImmunoPrecise Antibodies Ltd., regained Nasdaq listing compliance organically without a reverse split or dilution, and was subsequently added to the Russell 3000E and Russell Microcap Indexes. Results and filings are available through the company’s investor relations newsroom and on EDGAR.
Two developments since year-end frame where the platform is heading. The company filed a European patent application covering high-dimensional data structures for biological subsequences and property inference, building on its foundational HYFT patent estate. And on July 23, 2026, at AMD’s Advancing AI 2026 event in San Francisco, MindWalk presented the first public demonstration of ReefIQ™ running on AMD Instinct™ accelerators, which the company describes as memory-rich and open-stack. MindWalk participated as a selected featured exhibitor; that selection does not imply endorsement, sponsorship, partnership or any commercial relationship with AMD beyond the showcase itself.
There are several risks associated with the Company’s plans. MindWalk is a micro-cap company that remains unprofitable, and revenue is still primarily fee-for-service discovery work rather than recurring platform revenue, which management has described as modest and not yet significant to the fiscal 2026 total. The contracted, recurring arrangements referenced above are not quantified, and specific customers, deployment counts and contract values have not been disclosed. Operating expenses in the commercial organization rose during the year with no guidance provided on their trajectory, fourth quarter revenue came in below analyst estimates, and the shares traded lower after the print. The company reports in Canadian dollars and files as a foreign private issuer on Form 20-F. Readers should review the Company’s filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and on SEDAR+ in full.

In other industry developments and happenings in the market this week include:
Tempus AI, Inc. (Nasdaq: TEM) sells precision-medicine diagnostics alongside a data licensing business that supplies pharmaceutical customers with multimodal clinical and molecular data, which makes it the closest large-scale public analogue to the argument that context, not models, is the asset. The company reported second quarter 2026 results with revenue of $382.5 million, up 22% year over year, Diagnostics contributing $289.3 million on 20% growth and Data and Applications $93.2 million on 28% growth.
Gross profit rose 26% to $246.5 million and the company recorded net income of $5.6 million against a net loss of $42.8 million a year earlier, with adjusted EBITDA of $8.0 million versus negative $5.6 million. Oncology volume grew 31% year over year and Data Licensing and Modeling revenue rose 36%. Founder and Chief Executive Officer Eric Lefkofsky described the quarter as exceptional and attributed it to investments made in AI over several years. Tempus is a materially larger business than most names in this cohort and is referenced for sector context rather than as a comparable.
Schrödinger, Inc. (Nasdaq: SDGR) takes the opposite technical route to the same problem, applying physics-based computational chemistry rather than pattern learning to molecular discovery. The company recently reported second quarter 2026 annual contract value of $29.6 million, representing 27% growth, and launched an early access version of Bunsen, described as an agentic AI co-scientist for molecular discovery.
Chief Executive Officer Ramy Farid stated that the results reflect growing industry adoption of a predict-first approach to molecular discovery, and that as biopharma navigates a rapidly evolving AI landscape and mounting pressure to accelerate discovery, the need to generate ground-truth data has never been greater. That last phrase is the point of contact with the broader thesis. Whether the ground truth is generated by simulation or preserved from prior programs, the constraint being described is the same one.
Twist Bioscience Corporation (Nasdaq: TWST) operates further down the stack again, manufacturing synthetic DNA and NGS tools that the discovery industry consumes as raw input. The company announced third quarter fiscal 2026 revenue of $118.4 million, growth of more than 23% year over year and its fourteenth consecutive quarter of growth, with gross margin of 52.8%, up sequentially from 51.6%. NGS Applications revenue grew 12% to $61.8 million.
Full-year fiscal 2026 revenue guidance was raised to a range of $456 million to $457 million, an increase of $12 million at the midpoint, and the company reiterated its expectation of adjusted EBITDA breakeven in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026. Chief Executive Officer and co-founder Emily M. Leproust said the company remains confident in its trajectory and added that the breakeven milestone is not the destination. Twist is a picks-and-shovels business rather than a software one, included here because the infrastructure-beneath-discovery argument runs through physical inputs as well as data.
Absci Corporation (Nasdaq: ABSI) designs biologics with generative AI and has been moving from a pure discovery platform toward clinical-stage development of its own therapeutics. In results reported August 11, 2026, the company posted second quarter revenue of $0.3 million against $0.6 million a year earlier, research and development expenses of $22.6 million versus $20.5 million, and a net loss of $33.2 million compared with $30.6 million.
Cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities stood at $201.1 million at June 30, 2026, up from $125.7 million at March 31, following a capital raise that included a $40 million strategic investment from Eli Lilly and extended runway into the second half of 2028. Founder and Chief Executive Officer Sean McClain pointed to positive Phase 1 interim data from the HEADLINE trial and to interim proof-of-concept data for pattern hair loss expected later this year, with a full 26-week readout in early 2027. Both revenue and loss per share came in below analyst estimates and the shares fell sharply in after-hours trading on the print, so the strengthened balance sheet and the quarterly numbers are telling different stories.
